Over the years, I have used ToolBook, Trainersoft, and even Dreamweaver with Coursebuilder. Back when I first started developing e-learning courses, I used Macromedia's Authorware. For more interactive elements, I used Flash and imported the SWFs into Authorware.

We could learn Hypercard or we could learn Toolbook. I had chosen the corporate track so I selected Toolbook. But luckily the other student that knew toolbook knew it REALLY well and I learned a lot. Again, a huge let down.

I will be dating myself here, but so much of the orthodoxy in the instructional design process was forged back in the late 80’s and early 90’s when the only Computer-Based Training (CBT) tools were Toolbook for the PC, and Hypercard for the Mac. Due to the technical constraints it became a law that “pages must not scroll”.

If a RCAT vendor tells you they have been in business for over 10 years, they are somewhat misleading, since WBT courses really didn’t start to hit the mark until 2000 and then you have limited choices on how to build. I learned Toolbook and Authorware on my own while in the program. Im one of the unfortunate ones with a actual honest to goodness Masters Degree in EdTech. The degree opens many doors but thats about it. Nothing I learned is actually applied today. The profs understood very little tech.
