Your image should be more than just generic clipart. To keep your course looking neat and professional, don’t mix and match clipart and photos. Clipart photos are tempting because they generally have a small file size, but they also don’t resonate as much as real photos do. Does it attract your learners’ attention?

On the other end of the spectrum, we also didn’t want the unprofessional feel of using mismatched clipart. In my opinion, it matters less what style of image (realistic photos, clipart, etc) and more that the themes match throughout your course. For example, if you’re going to use clipart, that’s fine, but use the same style.

Seeing a course with Clipart from 1998 is distracting more than anything. The use of charts and images to convey information is much appreciated. I also enjoy when a course uses contemporary styling for the graphics as well. Is no more than an hour and a half in duration. I have a pretty good attention span, but I’m not superman.

Avoid bad imagery such as artificial stock images, blurry images, MS Office 97 clipart. Don’t be lazy with graphic design: standard fonts, overuse of bullet points, predictable screen layout. Ensure your lists use the same indent spacing. Always label your objects in the timeline. Remove any orphans – a single word on a new line.

Do not use clipart. Same rule applies for ALL CAPs. Bolding and underlining all caps is THE WORST. As for bold – remember, if everything is bold, then nothing is bold. Same rule applies to italics. Use only photos. But don't use silhouettes or any images of people that do not have faces. Alignment means something.

Do not use cartoonish clipart , what does it add (distraction). If you need an image to support a point, use real images, you can download many images from Microsoft's clipart page. Look how they are laid out, their use of colours (and lack of bullet points). Just make sure to only use 'photos'.
