A couple of weeks back we posted about Silverlight posing some (at this time, actually little) competition to Flash. Now we have HTML 5 coming up – this makes the race hotter. Or does it? Those of you have heard of HTML 5 will know it’s a new version of HTML and XHTML being promoted by Google and Apple in a bid to move the web away from proprietary technologies like Flash, Silverlight and JavaFX.

Its that time of year again where everyone wants to know what's coming up in 2010. Or we look back at 2009 and reflect. Both are excellent practices, but I think everyone has pretty much covered all of the bases. If you can't find any, then just leave me a comment and I'll see what I can find for you. This might not be much of a look into 2010 but I definitely feel a new trend.

Instructivism is dead. Gone are the days of an authoritarian teacher transmitting pre-defined information to passive students. In the 1990s, constructivism heralded a new dawn in instructional design, turbo-charged by the rise of Web 2.0. Students morphed into participants , empowered to seek new knowledge and understanding for themselves, in the context of their own unique, individual experiences.

Our profession is undergoing a transformation, moving away from rigid, one-size-fits-all methodologies. While I think there are many legitimate reasons why an organization should partake in virtual immersive environments (VIEs) for learning and collaboration, there are also some "less-than-comfortable" reasons organizations are leaning in this direction. Many times these reasons aren't discussed but they are just as valid in the minds of many.

Last week I met several new prospective customers - training companies. The prospects varied in size from a single person company (with several associates on contract basis) to very large companies serving Fortune 500 companies; and whose focus varied from soft skills training to Aerospace graphics and documentation. The common theme emerging from these meetings is that their clients have started asking for eLearning solutions or blended solutions.

As virtual classes rapidly become de rigueur , the need for an effective virtual facilitation framework accelerates. I propose the 5-stage model of e-moderation developed by world-renowned networked learning guru, Gilly Salmon. While Salmon’s model primarily supports asynchronous networked learning, I contend that it supports synchronous networked learning just as well.

Good audio is critical to your elearning success. You might be a great instructional designer and create the most engaging courses possible. But it all falls apart if the audio quality in your course is not very good. In an earlier post we looked at when it makes sense to consider paying for professional narration. If you have the money, this is a viable option.

When Stephen Downes laid down his manifesto for e-Learning 2.0 in 2005 , he tapped into the zeitgeist of emerging social technologies and theorised a number of possibilities. A recent study suggests that the common habit of “building&# information on a slide can interfere with learning. The researchers used Camtasia Studio to create two presentations on information security. The audio narration was the same in both presentations. The visuals were the same, too, except one presentation used an average of 3.4 animations per slide to make bullet points, words, or images enter at different times.

Last week, we looked at some basic tips to record high-quality audio. Those tips leaned more on the technology. Today we’ll look at what you can do to get the best narration.
