Brand new theory: “The committee member life cycle”

From the Coleface

It is slightly tragic that I have spent much of my adult life on committees, from student societies to residents’ associations to industry bodies. As Athletic Union Chairman at the University of Bristol, I remember the extreme joy that was chairing/ sitting on 14 different committees. This experience has led to my new contribution to social science: “The committee member life cycle.” I hope one day this will be seen as the naughty little brother of the Forming, Storming, Normin

Delicious Upgrade

Tony Karrer

Yesterday, at my presentation Introduction to eLearning 2.0 - ASTD OC , I mentioned that Yahoo MyWeb had a few features that del.icio.us was sorely missing. And that had made me previously conclude: Yahoo MyWeb better than del.icio.us, rollyo, et.al. for Personal / Group Learning However, I told everyone that del.icio.us had been acquired by Yahoo and it was likely that slowly these features would get integrated.

Second Life and e-learning

From the Coleface

Second Life is becoming ever more popular and parts of real life ranging from currency to concerts are happening there. Hence it was only a matter of time before the e-learning industry took note. Following its use in some universities as reported by the Guardian, research has been funded to see how learning can work in Second Life. Does the opportunity to be free of the normal bounds of their own personalities allow new opportunities for learning and personal growth in corporate environments?

Diamonds in the mud

Learning with e's

They saved the best 'til last. The papers on the final day really cut the mustard for me. I chaired a session entitled 'pedagogical and psychological issues' (on my own request to the conference organisers) and I wasn't disappointed. An all female crew of 4 presenters took us through a fast-paced spectrum of ideas and research around e-learning. Maja Snyder (University of Maribor, Slovenia) evaluated several e-learning courses from a student perspective.

Learning Management Systems (LMS) Gotchas

Tony Karrer

I regularly read Tracy Hamilton's blog. She's been writing about getting a new LMS. I hate to say it, but this is likely not going to go well. It will be fun to keep reading about it, probably much better than having to be Tracy during the process. In her latest post: What's Happening With My New LMS?!?! she tells us: Oh and my little meeting about my job role and what path this LMS will lead me down.

Tipping point at the Northern Rock

From the Coleface

In marketing and change management courses, I have found the tipping point concept (Gladwell) really useful to illustrate how small changes can cause a big effect. Gladwell’s book is unashamedly US focused. but now we have just lived through a great UK example – Northern Rock. On Friday as the NR shares plummeted it was still perfectly rational for me and other savers to leave our savings with them.

How do I get the most out of an RFP?

eLearning Blender

Writing an RFP - What a Conundrum! All the articles say that a crucial part of the LMS selection process is writing a quality RFP, but nobody goes on to tell you how. In my own interest, I am going to attempt to answer the question of how to write a quality RFP. Oh yeah, it took me a while to figure it out and you may be wondering the same thing; RFP means "request for proposal.

What Is the Actual Cost of an Open Role in Your Company?

In today's tight labor market, hiring and retaining top talent is more challenging than ever. Every day a job remains unfilled means lost productivity and revenue. Because of my background working with leading startups, e.g., eHarmony, MyShape, LoanToolbox, etc., my background in eLearning, and the fact that I'm a CTO-type person, I may get more of these kinds of calls, so I'm curious if other folks are seeing this as well.

I just came in from Midhurst , West Sussex (old country), London. The place reminded me that humans have not changed through generations. People want to control things and their environment. While in flight, I finished reading Daniel Gilbert's book, "Stumbling on Happiness.” Gilbert is a Psychologist and Harvard professor. He says, to paraphrase, we want to control because it makes us feel safe and the process satisfies us.
