Out and About: Obtaining Your New Year's Resolution

Kapp Notes

Ok, so the first month of the year is over. How are you doing with your resolutions? Here is a great tip for helping to achieve your resolutions or to achieve any goal you are seeking. One of the most effective ways to reach a goal is to write it down. This forces you to slow down, think through the issues and then put them down on paper or computer screen.

Learning in a Virtual World

Moodle Journal

Just lately a lot of my time has been taken up with Second Life, if you have yet to try virtual worlds then let me recommend the experience. My principle reason for the whole venture is to see how this new semi-immersed virtual reality can be utilised for teaching and learning, even as an extension to our continuing work with Moodle. On Saturday 17th of Feb at 5pm I will begin hosting some presentation trials that will be looking at the Linden Script, that’s the language in SL, and comparing it

One more time - so what is e-learning?

Clive on Learning

Now I've spent more of my valuable time than I would like over the past ten years explaining to those in the corporate learning and development community what e-learning is, more specifically what else it is over and above packaged self-study courses. Those with an educational perspective on the subject are completely familiar with the opportunities that online learning provides for making connections, collaborating with peers, engaging with tutors and subject experts, and contributing to the cr

Design: Informed Design

Kapp Notes

Here is an instructional design methodology that is worth investigating. It is called "Informed Design." Informed Design, is a design pedagogy developed and validated through several National Science Foundation (NSF) projects conducted by the Hofstra Center for Technological Literacy. Informed design prompts research, inquiry, and analysis; fosters student and teacher discourse; and cultivates language proficiency.

Great HBR Article on What's Coming

Tony Karrer

While the article is high-level, it's a really interesting set of perspectives on things that will be happening in the next few years. Likely you are seeing several of these already. The HBR List - Breakthrough Ideas for 2007 FYI - I read somewhere that the article would only be available for a limited time for free.

Video beats the audio star

Moodle Journal

At the start of this term decided to try using my PDA to record parts of my lectures, and these recording are in range of 3 to 4 minutes. The particular course that I selected for this is my High Level Programming for level 4 students, and to date I have made about 40 recordings. But I thought I would tryout something of an experiment by making these recording available in two forms, one being a straightforward mp3, while the other would feature a speaking CrazyTalk avatar.

Insights on Business Drivers of Social Networking

Vignettes Learning

Back to square one - my true love: people and groups. I am now in a learning technology-based business, though I am a frustrated "Organization Development” consultant (my PhD). However, I am back to where I started 25 years ago, studying the psychology of people and groups in organizations. I am referring to recent developments where psychology of groups is now merging and coalescing with technology in "social networking.” I thought you might be interested to see this white paper by Akamai,

A Tale of Two Program Pilots

The Learning Circuits

I just got results back from two pilots with the goal of evaluating the same, 15 hour training program. In one pilot, the program sponsor cajoled a bunch of colleagues into doing the program. He oversold the fun aspects of it, and undersold the real work and time requirement required. Literally less than 20% into the program, the coach had to (appropriately) push on the participants for not doing any of the self-paced work, the participants revolted, the pilot failed, and the program sponsor los

Donald Clark - Dumbness of Crowds - Hmmmm

Tony Karrer

I generally agree with what Donald has to say, but on this post, I think he's right about collaboration vs. independent work, but draws a bad conclusion: Donald Clark Plan B: Dumbness of Crowds. First - I tend to agree with Donald that most Web 2.0 activities are more independent actions of individuals than true collaborative work (team work) on a work product.

The Battle of the Authoring Tools: A 10-Point Comparison for Picking the Right One

Speaker: Chris Paxton McMillin, President of D3 Training Solutions

There are plenty of great authoring tools for developing eLearning, but the one you select could directly impact your course's outcomes. Depending upon your learners’ needs and your organization’s performance goals, you could be overlooking considerations that impact the both effectiveness of your courses and how long it takes to finish them. From general capabilities to specific workflow structures, some aspects are critical when it comes to learning objectives and deadlines.

I'm in the middle of designing and developing a new blended learning course on the whole subject of embedded learning/performance support. The course will consist of some synchronous and asynchronous online activities and a two-day workshop. My general philosophy is, as far as possible, to have the participants co-create the content in a wiki as an output from their work on the course.

Don't hire me! Evaluate your own training budget in three simple steps

The Learning Circuits

I love doing a good training audit as much as anyone. But you can do a lot yourself. When I review training budgets for clients, one tool I use is to break spending into three categories: 1. The money spent to to fulfill obligations. These are the funds that are spent doing what the training group had committed to doing in the past. These might include ethics and sexual harassment training, new employee training, HIPPA compliance, and so on. 2.

The big question for January: quality v speed

Clive on Learning

The Learning Circuits big question for January asks "What are the trade offs between quality learning programs and rapid e-learning and how do you decide?" Well, there's an assumption underlying this and I'm questioning it. Who says e-learning materials that take a long time to produce are necessarily high quality, let alone relevant or effective? There isn't a member of the e-learning community who hasn't worked on projects that were over-engineered, over budget and appeared way past their dead

Investing in Informal Learning

According to Training in America by Garnevale, Gainer, and Villet (1990), two out of three workers say that everything they need to know was learned on the job, rather than through the classrooms. Thus the workplace is the most frequently traveled avenue to education and training for most employed persons. The authors further go on to state that estimates of employer investments in workplace training hover around $210 billion annually.

2007 - Year of Enterprise Mashups?

I just saw an article/post by Dion Hinchcliffe - Enterprise mashups get ready for prime-time. It reminded me of Visual Basic in the early days. In fact, I strongly believe that Visual Basic is a really good parallel for what is coming - except the widgets that you put into your application will be di
