The dreaded Right Click

eLearning Blender

I am working on developing eLearning technical training courses for an ERP software application being implemented within a division of the company I work for using Adobe Captivate 3. If you are familiar with Adobe Captivate then you are familiar with "Assesment Simulations." I love assessment simulations because they require the learner to do the clicking rather than just viewing a screen recording of the process.

Micro to Macro

eLearning Weekly

My career in learning and technology happened by total chance. I started in the world of computer science and web programming, but quickly transitioned to educational technology and then eLearning. Building eLearning courses came naturally to me because I was used to building web sites and web applications. I built custom interactions in Flash, tamed SCORM, and wrote a ton of HTML and JavaScript.

What I Learned This Year

Experiencing eLearning

I’m going to squeak in at the last minute and answer the Learning Circuits Big Question for December 2008. I can pretend that I’m just being nice and keeping Clive Shepherd company with his procrastinating, but it’s really that I had forgotten about this myself until just a few days ago. This month’s Big Question asks us to reflect on our learning about learning in the last year.

Connectivism and the modern learner

E-Learning Provocateur

Recently, I read a blog article about connectivism by Debora Gallo. Soon after, I attended a presentation about m-learning by Jan Herrington, in which she too mentioned connectivism. This got me thinking… I don’t know anything about connectivism! So after several hours of unenlightened googling, I decided to bite the bullet, go back to first principles and read George Siemens’ seminal paper, Connectivism: A Learning Theory for the Digital Age.

Learning Organization Dimensions

Clark Quinn

After my post on Improving Organizational Learning Infrastructure, Daan Assen suggested that it was too limited in reference to the broader Learning Organization picture. That’s valuable feedback, because I really mean it to be the learning organization culture and the technology infrastructure, the latter of which isn’t included traditionally in the learning organization work.

Best Practices for Software Training?

Learning Visions

This has been the year of software training. I've been involved in I don't know how many training modules, ranging from the overly long to the shorter chunked variety. (Remember, all I do is online, self-paced eLearning). We've taken scenario-based approaches, so the learner can sit with an expert and watch how he does his job using the software. We've inserted pictures of these characters to give a course more life and interest.

Today my team undertook an interesting evaluation activity: We tested whether we could process a particular task after completing the online training that we had developed for it. I’m glad to report that we could! While we don’t process the task day-to-day, we were still able to acquire the basic skills from the online training and apply them effectively in the “real world&#.

Rethinking Learning Styles

Clark Quinn

I’ve pointed out the problems with learning styles in the past, but I want to rethink them with you, as we took quite a positive out of them in a unique way. This was back in 99-2000, when I led a project developing an intelligently adaptive learning system (Intellectricity ™; inspired by Joe Miller ’s vision of a system that respected who you were as a learner).

You Like Awards?

Tony Karrer

Stephen Downes has once again come out with complaints about how the Edublog Awards are being handled this year. It makes me wonder, do "You Like Awards?" OK, so the edublog awards nominations are out. I honestly don't know what they were thinking this time around - there's something like twenty or so nominees in some categories (and I'm not sure what to make of the result that this website is not among the twenty or so considered for best individual weblog - it's not sour grapes, I'm just bemus

On Games and eLearning

Learning Visions

As eLearning designers, your goal is (hopefully) to make the learning experience engaging. (Realistically, sometimes all you can do is build the sucker in order to meet some crazy deadline.) It's easy to equate engaging with fun. (Fun is a funny word.) So then it's really easy to think that the best way to make a course more engaging is to make it fun.

There are plenty of great authoring tools for developing eLearning, but the one you select could directly impact your course's outcomes. Depending upon your learners’ needs and your organization’s performance goals, you could be overlooking considerations that impact the both effectiveness of your courses and how long it takes to finish them. From general capabilities to specific workflow structures, some aspects are critical when it comes to learning objectives and deadlines.

Giving People Time to Deal with Change

Our team has spent over a year preparing for the conversion from Blackboard to Sakai (something I haven’t talked about here too much because we hadn’t told Blackboard we were leaving until recently). Words of Wisdom*

Clark Quinn

HR speaking: We got into elearning when there were scattered experiments going on around the organization. Of course we stopped those, as we need a coordinated approach. We want to grow in a controlled way. Our first move was, of course, to purchase an LMS. A good LMS is like a fine automobile, with lots of capabilities to handle all conditions. We selected the top of the line, to last a long time.

ASTD's Big Question for December 2008: New Learning

The ASTD Big question this month is What did you learn about learning in 2008? I learn so much all the time from students, clients and colleagues, it is hard to narrow it down to just two or three things, but I'll try. Here are a few of the lessons I have learned. Mostly about finding a good "model" for mobile learning course design, how others tend to view immersive learning environments and how Social Media is taking off in the least likely places.

An alumni bulletin mentioned research done by Hal Pashler (who was a new professor while I was a grad student; I was a teaching assistant for him, and he let me give my first lecture in his class), and talks about the intervals necessary for successful learning.
