Using Silverlight/Expression Blend for eLearning Development

Upside Learning

Elearning development tools: only Adobe? Over the last ten years or so, major elearning developers have preferred to use tools like Flash, Authorware and Director from Adobe (earlier Macromedia). The reason was simple– it was an easier way to achieve the multimedia integration needed to deliver engaging content over variety of media (standalone CD based and then transitioning to web based).

Google Wave in 10 Minutes

Experiencing eLearning

Lots of people have written about Google Wave, but I haven’t really had time to watch the full 80-minute demo. If you’re looking for a shorter version, this 10-minute video shows the highlights and some of the possibilities without requiring the full time commitment of the full preview. I’ve been using Google Docs to collaborate with SMEs for over two years now, and it’s great for a lot of things.

Could animations hurt learning? » Making Change

Making Change

A recent study suggests that the common habit of “building&# information on a slide can interfere with learning. The researchers used Camtasia Studio to create two presentations on information security. The audio narration was the same in both presentations. The visuals were the same, too, except one presentation used an average of 3.4 animations per slide to make bullet points, words, or images enter at different times.

What Sports Teach Our Kids and Why Video Games are Better.

Kapp Notes

Violence at a Youth Hockey Game. Introduction Recently I appeared on a local radio talk show to speak about some of the benefits of Video Games for education. It is a popular topic for radio talk shows because it is somewhat controversial and many people have strong opinions on the topic (not really based on fact but strong opinions never-the-less.) You can listen to the show and see some of the interesting comments at the link Educating through video games -- Radio Smart Talk, Tuesday, June 23

This is a very strange time. While increasing amount of concept work and the pace of change puts a premium on learning, the business of learning faces an incredibly difficult time. In the past few weeks, I've had some really eye-opening conversations about the state of Learning as a Business. It makes me realize that we had really better get moving on thinking about our collective future.

I’ll confess that I may not have been at the ASTD conference every day this past week, but I do have some impressions of the event I’d like to share. I was pleasantly surprised at the large turn-out (unofficial estimates are somewhere around 8,000), which was comprised of a large contingent of international attendees and probably a good amount of people networking for a job.

Social Media Conversations

Tony Karrer

This post is just a quick reminder of the beauty of interesting new social media conversations and social media relationships. Ken Allan and I have had several interesting exchanges via our blogs and around the eLearning Learning site. I'm not even sure what I would call Ken – it's somewhere in the peer, colleague, friend space. I've never met Ken and I don't think we've had a real-time conversation (apologies to Ken if that's not true).

Malcolm Gladwell: All about Spaghetti Sauce and Dosas

Would you expect to pay the same for a cubic metre of kitchen whether that cubic metre was the space next to the door or occupied with an aga? The cost of a kitchen is driven by 1) what purpose it needs to fulfil and 2) what it contains.
