Instructional Design and E-Learning Blogs

Experiencing eLearning

Back when I wrote my instructional design careers series in 2007, I was only aware of a few blogs by instructional designers. Since then, I’ve discovered a wealth of blogs by instructional designers, e-learning developers, and workplace learning specialists. These categories are somewhat loose; some people could be in multiple categories. Instructional Designers.

Education As We Know It Is Finished

Lars is Learning

So says Clayton M. Christensen and Michael B. Horn in Forbes magazine. As authors of Disrupting Class, a useful manifesto on how innovation will change "the way the world learns". There is a growing head of steam around changes to education systems around the world, largely driven by budget cuts. My hope is that the opportunity is grabbed to more deeply re-think how we use learning technology to.

The Social Media Cigarette Break

Clark Quinn

In the course of my interviews for the mobile learning book, Robert Gadd ( OnPoint Digital ) made a comment that’s stuck with me. He opined that the new ‘cigarette’ break was the social media break where employees will stand outside with their mobile phone and check in on their social networks. The reason, of course, being that their companies block social media access via their IT infrastructure.

Class Meeting in 3D World of Second Life

Kapp Notes

Learning in 3D Class sitting around conference room table. Jumping into a virtual world can be a fun but scary and daunting place for first timers. As instructional designers, one of our "missions" is to help learners overcome the scary and daunting aspects so learning occurs. One of my beliefs is that designers need to be made to feel like learners again so they can empathize with the people for whom they are building instruction.

On principle, practice, experimentation, and theory

Clark Quinn

On twitter today a brief conversation ensued about best practices versus best principles. I’ve gone off on this before ( I think Dilbert sums it up nicely), and my tweet today captures my belief: “please, *not* best practices; abstract best principles and recontextualize!&#. However, I want to go further. Several times recently I’ve had people ask for research that justifies a particular position.

EVER TRIED TO HIT A MOVING TARGET AT TWENTY PACES WITH A COLT 45?

In the movies, the marshal steps out from behind the big rock, draws his Colt.45 and enforces the law by dispatching a few outlaws as they dive for cover 20 or 30 yards away. In real life it was not as simple as that. About 40 years ago I read a tremendous book by Earl Forrest about a feud that took place in Navajo County, Arizona in the 1880s. The feud was between two families.

What Businesses Can Learn From Nonprofits

For-profit companies have much to learn from the nonprofit sector.   This is the topic that Nancy Lublin, nonprofit leader and social marketing consultant to   corporations, addresses in an article she wrote for Fast Company Magazine that is adapted from her new book, Zilch: The Power of Zero in Business.
