Last week, while justifying Apple’s refusal to allow Flash player on iPhone/iPad, Steve Jobs wrote– “ New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and PCs too) ”. A few days before the launch of iPad Apple had released a list of ‘iPad ready’ websites having support for HTML5. Clearly Apple is backing HTML 5, CSS 3 and JavaScript for developing future web applications.

Instructional design is not only seen as a core competency for learning and development/training specialists, but it’s a huge industry, too. Most learning vendors tout their ‘expertise in instructional design’ as a key reason as to why we should engage them to produce learning content. If we do so, then almost invariably their approach is around developing content in an ‘instructionally-sound way’ to produce a set of ‘learning interventions’.

eLearn: Opinions – Better Design Doesn’t Take Longer! A boring introduction to e-learning takes just as long to write as one that tells learners WIIFM. I think scenario-based assessments do take longer to write than traditional forced choice answers, but overall, the idea is right. After the initial transition period, better design doesn’t have to take much longer than crappy learning design built for regurgitation. tags : instructionaldesign , e-learning.

While working on rapid authored courses (courses authored using rapid authoring tools), I often encounter the decision point of whether to use freeform rapid authoring tools or the traditional template-based tools. Both have their own pros and cons. In this post, I attempt to discuss more on these. Last year, we mentioned that there is a time and place for rapid authoring while opting for it.

The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) launched an online resource for potential and current educators in West Virginia called Teach West Virginia and as part of the initiative, a 3D world is playing a key role in the process. According to the article West Virginia looks to Second Life As part of the program, they have developed a unique and groundbreaking virtual world on the internet’s largest 3D virtual community, Second Life.

In response to a query about why someone would question the concept of the LMS, I penned the (slightly altered, for clarity) response that follows: What seems to me to be the need is to have a unified performer-facing environment. Just before I went on holiday recently I was asked how human learning has changed with the advent, penetration and increasing ubiquity of computing technology. My answer was simple – it hasn’t. Human learning hasn’t fundamentally changed over the last fifty years. Our ability to learn is something honed over several hundred millennia, it’s what set us apart from the primates in the first place.

A 3D Virtual World role play provides a realistic environment in which two or more people act out a scenario. Role playing is valuable for immersing a trainee in a job she would actually be doing. This type of environment is flexible. No matter what direction a learner takes, the experienced person playing the other role can provide the right feedback and act appropriately for the role.

Harold put up a post that the “ LMS is no longer the centre of the universe “, while Jane asked “ what is the future of the LMS “ Both of them are recognizing the point I make about the scope of learning in thinking about performance: it’s more than just courses, it’s the whole ecosystem.

I've been underwhelmed (Captivate 1 to 2 didn't do much for me) and amazed (Captivate 3 to 4 was a major step forward for the program). With the upgrade from Captivate 4 to 5, I'm awestruck.

Last week a lot of 3D news occurred, here is a round up of some of the highlights: I stopped by the ASTD booth of Digitell, Inc. and met James A. Parker, the President, who said his booth was buzzing the entire conference and a lot of people were interested in 3D webinars. Digitell is company that owns VirtualU a 3D virtual immersive environment that has been used for everything from meetings to rock concerts.
