However it is also important to know the “Why” to designing a character. Knowing the answers to “Why&# helps one take decisions about the design process.

Here are even a few more alternatives to Second Life for you to check out. OpenSimulator or OpenSim Building in OpenSim. OpenSimulator is a 3D Application Server. It can be used to create a virtual environment (or world) which can be accessed through a variety of clients, on multiple protocols. OpenSimulator is released under a BSD License, making it both open source, and commercially friendly to embed in products.

An important element in creating effective learning in a 3D virtual world is to create the right environment. Since virtual immersive environments are, by definition, immersive, the environment plays a critical role in the training process. A 3D world can be realistic like putting a person in a sales situation and asking them to perform or it can be more surreal like having a doctor walk through a giant heart to gain another perspective on human anatomy.

However, there is no better feedback you can get than from the learners who take the course themselves. They are some of the most qualified responders to tell you if the course is adequate for their job role and whether or not the course was easy and intuitive to follow.

We have been experimenting with development of Augmented Reality [AR] applications for some time now. Earlier this week we released the first Indian Layar app called Pune Layar and had earlier created a simple Car Game using FLARToolkit. While developing these applications we considered many alternative tools & technologies to develop such applications for learning.

One of the great things about writing Learning in 3D is that we got to work with some great people doing some really innovative and exciting things in 3D and discuss how they got started working in 3D and, as important, we asked them how they overcame common objections from management and others in terms of implementing 3D virtual immersive environments into their organization.

Early in the year, I gave a presentation online to the Massachusetts chapter of ISPI (the international society for performance improvement), and they rewarded me with a membership. A nice gesture, I figured, but little more (only a continent away). To my benefit, I was very wrong. The ISPI organization gave each chapter a free registration to their international conference, which happens to be in San Francisco this year (just a Bart trip away), and I won!

Moodle is a good LMS with which has grown over the years and offers a host of functionality and features that are very useful to have in an LMS. Add to it the fact that its open source which makes it free to use, has made it very popular. Moodle has been able to sustain itself and keep evolving through its community, resulting in its emergence as a good option for anyone wanting to use an LMS.
