Learner-Centric eLearning Design

B Online Learning

Years ago when I was learning to be a teacher, I was quickly thrown in the deep end to teach a group of adult learners. ‘Prac teaching’ can be a daunting experience. I still remember the feedback from the teacher who observed my first lesson; she said I needed to be more ‘learner-centric’. It took [.].

The future of MOOCs

E-Learning Provocateur

MOOCs get a bad rap. Dismissed as prescriptive, or teacher-centric, or unsocial, or something else, it’s like a badge of honour to espouse why you dislike MOOCs. Despite their pedagogical flaws, however, MOOCs provide unprecedented access to quality content for millions of learners. It’s all very well for Apple-owning, organic-buying professionals to cast aspersions, but consider the girl in Pakistan who’s too scared to set foot in a classroom.

Using a Learning Management System to Gather Good Ideas

There’s a winding, two-lane highway in Quebec that has a telephone/electrical pole standing in the middle. This isn’t a joke. I’ve inserted a photo from a reputable news source below to show you that this really exists. How did this happen? Apparently, a road crew was sent to pave the road and they worked around the pole, rather than coordinating with a crew from the electrical company to remove the pole first.

Emerging new roles for learning and performance professionals

Jane Hart

Over the last week or so I have been posting about how (I think) the workplace learning landscape is changing. For me, the biggest shift is not going to be about moving from creating instructional, formal courses to producing informational (or performance support) resources. That’s obviously a very useful first step, but it’s going to require more than that.

Returning to the didactical roots: innovation in eLearning?

Challenge to Learn

Earlier this month I presented at DevLearn on connecting learning to the business and this week I did a webinar and a seminar on adaptive learning. During these sessions I noticed that our basic approach (Determine learning objectives, Figure out how to assess and then create only the content that is really needed) is far from standard. Most people create content, create an assessment and that is it.

“Learning the new” vs “Learning the old”

Jane Hart

For many people the word “learning” is synonymous with studying, lessons, classes, etc – because that is how we have been conditioned to believe how “learning” happens. We think back to how we learned at school with a teacher, who took us through a topic step by step, in a logical way. It was the teacher who “joined the dots” for us, linking together all the aspects of the topic in a structured way to help us understand it.

Professional Learning: The SCOPE Approach and Plan

Jane Hart

Professional Learning is often seen as something that takes place outside the workplace. In fact as most organizations only focus on training individuals to do their basic duties, there is a strong need for individuals to take responsibility for their own professional learning (outside their organisation) and constantly update their knowledge and skills to remain marketable, as I pointed out in The future belongs to those who take charge of their own learning.

Know Thy Culture

The Performance Improvement Blog

Every organization has a culture. But not every organization has the kind of culture that will help that organization achieve success. Matt Monge says that organizations should take Socrates’ advice and “know thyself”. Monge says, “…we have to be willing to ask ourselves tough questions and give honest answers.”. Assessing the culture of an organization by asking tough questions and being willing to hear the answers is the basis for significant organizational improvement.
