From eLearning to mLearning: The Top 5 Challenges beyond Technology

mLearning Revolution

'Let’s get one thing out of the way, the future of eLearning isn’t about adding more ‘ animations ‘ to our existing eLearning (in the name of making courses more engaging), neither is it about an eLearning 2.0 or 3.0 vision. No, the future of eLearning and Learning in general is Mobile Learning or better yet Multiscreen Learning , either way we can abbreviate it as m Learning.

The Return Of Video To eLearning

Upside Learning

Josh Bersin cites YouTube Videos as one of the best learning tools available in his session at the HR Technology Conference last week. I agree and see a bigger role for videos in the learning mix. Ten or fifteen years ago, video was used by most organizations for training. They would have a library of VHS tapes and a screening room where employees could watch those videos.

Here are three videos, all from a slightly different perspective that, I think, are related in one way or another to the future of learning both within organizations and within academic institutions. We need to learn from the expert teachers, from what is happening online and, of course, from games. What makes a teacher great? (this clear back from 2012).

The future belongs to those who take charge of their own learning

Once upon a time (as all good fairy tales start) employees had a job for life. Having left school or college you could start work for an organization and remain there for your whole professional life. The company would provide you with all the training you needed, give you all the promotions you deserved and then at your retirement, reward your long service with the gift of a clock or a gold watch.

Ensuring a “Serious Game” Meets Its “Serious” Objectives

Kapp Notes

Here are some thoughts on what needs to be done to develop an instructional game that meets the objective of actually teaching something to the player. To ensure that the goals of a serious game are met, the first priority is to design the game to focus on those learning or social objectives from the beginning and not as an afterthought. One can’t bolt game elements onto traditional learning or social education and expect that to be an effective, interesting or even instructional game.

Does #Gamification Have Advantages Over Traditionally Designed Instruction?

Kapp Notes

Gamification has several definitions but the one I find most compelling is one that involves elements of games beyond just points, badges and leaderboards. A definition that includes using elements like challenge, story, role-play, feedback–what I call “deeper” game elements. When examined that way, one major advantage that gamification has over many traditionally designed e-learning courses and classroom lectures is the high level of interactivity, the expectation of a difficu

Think Multiscreen (vs. iPad-only) when developing an mLearning Strategy

mLearning Revolution

'One thing I stress in my mLearning workshops is the fact that having an iPad-only strategy for Learning is not a thorough mLearning Strategy. Granted, the iPad accounts for 91% of all tablet web traffic and that statistic alone is compelling enough to make you want to focus your entire learning development efforts on just this tablet, however as you think about your own mLearning strategy, I strongly encourage you to think instead about the multiscreen world we live in and develop for it.

Is Tin Can API Lipstick on the SCORM Pig?

Last week [October 25th] I had the distinct privilege of sitting in on the Tin Can API break-out session that was presented by Aaron Silvers of ADL. His business card says “the Beard”…and while that was accurate, I still don’t know his real title.
