Ideas About Games and Learner Assessment

Kapp Notes

Just read an article in our local newspaper that indicated the state of Pennsylvania spent $30 million dollars last year on testing. It kinda made me sick…especially since fill-in-the-blank testing only really has value when measuring a person’s ability to be successful at fill-in-the-blank tests, no real-world application. Games would be so much better at teaching application.

The TRUTH About Telecommuting [INFOGRAPHIC]

LearnDash

Many instructional designers enjoy a telecommuting schedule. Given the nature of the work involved for elearning development, it isn’t always necessary to be in the office 100% of the time, which is great for both the instructional designer and the client. However, despite all of the advantages, some organizations are still hesitant to pull the trigger on a telecommute schedule because of some misconceptions.

Some Differences Between Experts and Novices

Kapp Notes

As learning professionals, it is important that we understand that novice learners and expert learners demand/require and need a different approach to instruction. You cannot develop learning events for novices using the same instructional strategies as you do for someone who has a high level of knowledge in a content area. In fact, Ruth Clark points to reach that indicates that”many of the instructional methods that are effective for novices either have no effect or, in some cases, depres

Embedded Ubiquitous Learning

Upside Learning

We struggle to come to terms with the volumes of information that stream past us each day. More and more, we depend on digital agents to help us navigate that ‘data stream’ and glean information from it, and then to make sense of it. These digital agents can be looked at simply as computer programs that are connected to the information resources of the inter-webs, they could reside on your mobile phone as an application or accessed as one might a ‘cloud service’.

Does Performance Support Always Have to Be a Post-Training Solution?

Living in Learning

We began to blend training with some on-line content. It was good stuff. It was sexy. It was Flash-based; top drawer content, and we wound up perpetuating performance impact shortfalls with much greater efficiency. We were deploying learning. We were not implementing learning, and there is a significant difference between the two. We decided that the problem was based upon not being able to get to the “next level” of training.

PowerPoint: Create an Infographic

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

by AJ George  If you need to create an Infographic, there are better programs than PowerPoint that you could use. Photoshop would be a good choice, or maybe Fireworks. That being said, PowerPoint is likely on your office computer right now. Additionally, PowerPoint is often underutilized as a design platform and is surprisingly agile. One reason PowerPoint isn't the first program people think of for Infographics is that infographics are traditionally not the same size as a PowerPoint s

One of the biggest challenges facing eLearning professionals today is convincing leadership that it makes good business sense to implement an eLearning program. On the brink with mobile– what learning executives say

Allison Rossett

Words without actions. Words without actions. That’s how I described the status of mobile learning in an article in eLearn magazine ten months ago. My point then was that mobile offers immense potential for learning and support but that it is not yet making much of a difference in the enterprise. When San Diego State University (SDSU) colleague Jim Marshall and I surveyed more than a thousand educators in companies, agencies and universities about their eLearning practices, they reported

Teaching Expert Learners

Kapp Notes

Here are some tips for teaching expert learners. As employees and learners gain experience performing tasks and learning information, they develop mental representations known as mental models or a schema.
