She graciously agreed to let me publish some of her questions and my answers here, since I thought others might be in similar positions and share these questions. I have altered a few details to make this more applicable to a general audience, although some questions and answers specifically mention the transition from teaching to ID.

The Future of Workplace Training

The Performance Improvement Blog

Paul Matthews, in a blog post titled, “The future of training is not training,” argues that workplace training needs to be about building capability not delivering courses. He writes: Many people in training seldom stop to think why they are doing the training. The logistics and hassles of keeping the training department running are sufficient to fill up their days and obscure the real purpose.

I am not really big on “what-ifs”, but I thought about an interesting concept recently as I pondered the current state of our industry. When you consider that e-learning (and now m-learning) is growing exponentially in terms of revenue generated, it’s not all that inconceivable to think that a juggernaut like Google would enter the fray to get their piece of the pie.

Testing Games vs. Teaching Games

Kapp Notes

There is an important difference between games that teach a learner how to do something and games that test what a learner already knows. Too often those two types of games are confused and an instructional designer or other person places the wrong type of game into the curriculum. Testing Games are games where the learner already needs to know the information to be successful.

FREE Alternative to Camtasia Studio

One great way for instructional designers to create effective learning material is to include screenshots and videos in their e-learning modules. Who is training the online teachers to teach online?

Poorly organized content. Terrible to no graphics. So many bullet points that the screen ended up being 8pt Arial. A droning voice with no modulation or interest in the subject.

Using Fantasy in Instructional #Games

Kapp Notes

I am often asked if an instructional or training game should be “realistic” or can the game have “fantasy” elements and still be an effective learning tool. It turns out that there are several valid and research-based reasons for including fantasy as a key element in the design of games to help people learn. In the 1980’s Thomas Malone wanted to investigate why games are so much fun and motivational.
